About Me

Well, I'm a college student at Alfred University, originally from Hanson, MA, and I'm here to share my journey to healthy living with you.  Mind you, I might fail-- miserably.  But, after a nagging urge to garden again, I'm going to jump right into the deep end and see if I metaphorically swim as well as I actually do.

Here at Alfred, I'm studying to be a math teacher.  You can usually find me singing on my way to class and I also play the trumpet.  I'm always working, but when I do take a break, I'm knitting.  I love to make my own clothes either on my knitting needles or at my sewing machine.

It was a combination of my past and present that lead me to this point.  Growing up, we've always had a vegetable garden.  I worked at a greenhouse for a while when I was about 12, and also raised my own seeds in that same greenhouse.  As I got older and found a real summer job-- life guarding-- I stopped having time for gardening.  I never ate anything from the garden, so it wasn't much of a loss.  When I got to Alfred, and started getting involved in the community, I found a lot of farmers and local businesses pushing the "Stay local" message.  And I started realizing they were right.  I get my yarn my from the Alfred Knitting Studio down the street, my basic groceries from Kinfolk Grocery, and my raw milk and beef from Sunny Cove Farms.  While I was here, my dad started raising chickens.  I actually bring the fresh eggs back with me every break because they are so wonderful.  When I'm home, it's harder to stay local, but I try to get my produce from Lipinski's Farm or the local Farmers' Market and my sausage from Sausages Homemade and Natural.  I try to bike or walk when I can and keep my possessions low.  Nothing makes you realize how much stuff you have quite like moving twice a year for four years.

This blog is a place to share my adventures changing my lifestyle as well as some recipes, tips, and tricks to help you do the same.  I'm not trying to preach and I'm not trying to convert.  I'm just a new-age girl who's trying to live an old country life.
